Chappell Roan, the fast-rising pop singer-songwriter, made a splash on "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon" this Thursday. She captivated the audience in a bold feathered black outfit during her chat with Fallon, later changing into another feather-adorned ensemble for a stunning performance of her latest single, "Good Luck, Babe!"
Her performance was a visual and auditory delight, showcasing her impressive vocal range in the dramatic "I told you so!" climax of the song. The stage was set like a surreal garden, with Roan seated on a throne shaped like a white swan both at the beginning and end of the performance. It was her first time on late-night TV, and she made it count.
Fallon kicked off the interview by showing a throwback photo of a young Roan performing onstage to a small crowd. Roan reminisced, calling it “this weird gay festival” and shared that it was the first time she performed "Pink Pony Club," a tribute to an imagined nightclub "where boys and girls can all be queens every single day," featured on her debut album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess.” Fallon then showed a contrasting photo of the massive audience at her recent Governors Ball festival performance, which garnered wild applause from the Tonight Show crowd. When asked how it felt, Roan quipped, “It feels like I was right all along,” but then humbly added, “I felt like I’d made it already when people showed up to my concerts a few years ago, and this is the cherry on top.”
Discussing her unique style, which included a dress with two-foot-long feathers, feathered eye makeup, and four-inch-long nails, Roan credited her stylist, Genesis Webb. She explained, “We pull from drag, horror movies, burlesque, theater… I love looking pretty and scary, or pretty and tacky — or just not pretty, I love that too.”
Fallon mentioned a quote from her Coachella performance in April, “I’m your favorite artist’s favorite artist,” a sentiment echoed recently by SZA and Sabrina Carpenter, who covered “Good Luck, Babe!” on the BBC. Roan acknowledged the influence of veteran drag performer Sasha Colby’s saying, “I’m your favorite drag queen’s favorite drag queen.”
When Roan mentioned Colby’s name, an enthusiastic cheer came from the audience, prompting Roan to remark, “There’s gay people here!” She expressed her admiration for Colby, saying, “That [quote] just hit me through the heart, and I hope someday Sasha watches me and hears that.”
With three songs currently in the Billboard Hot 100 and numerous festival appearances lined up for the summer, Roan’s appearance on "Fallon" highlighted her rapid ascent since her TV debut on “Colbert” just four months ago.
