LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson, who recently wrapped up his third season in Baton Rouge, has been the subject of speculation regarding the head coaching position at Texas. The former Arizona coach's name has surfaced as a potential candidate if Texas decides to part ways with their current head coach, David Pierce.

Kendall Rogers, a prominent college baseball insider for D1Baseball, mentioned during a radio interview that Johnson could be a top candidate for the Texas job should Pierce be replaced. However, Rogers also indicated that a change in the Texas coaching staff is unlikely. "Everything I’m hearing suggests that Texas is more than likely not going to make a change," Rogers told radio host Matt Moscona. "Chris Del Conte, Texas' athletic director, aims to make a significant hire if they do decide to move on from Pierce."

Rogers noted that from Texas' perspective, Johnson would be a logical choice.

When asked on Tuesday about the Texas job and any potential contact with Texas officials, Johnson clarified the situation. "I have not been contacted. Contractually, if there were any contact, LSU Athletic Director Scott Woodward would be the first to know, as stipulated in my contract," Johnson said. "I am very grateful to be here at LSU and excited about our future. Things might look a little different than I envisioned 18 months ago, but that's fine. I believe I'm exceptionally suited for this role, ready to handle any challenges."

Johnson emphasized his commitment to LSU, saying, "We're not in Omaha this year, but no one was better positioned to help us navigate our season than me. I feel strongly about my ability to support LSU and our players in achieving great success. That's where my focus lies."

At 47, Johnson led LSU to a national title in 2023 and holds a record of 137-62 over three seasons with the Tigers.

David Pierce, a former Tulane coach, has an eight-season record of 297-162 with Texas, including three College World Series appearances.
