The Dallas Mavericks have traded shooting guard Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round picks to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for shooting guard Quentin Grimes, according to sources reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Tim Hardaway Jr., 32, is entering the final year of a four-year, $75 million contract, and is set to earn $16.2 million next season. Quentin Grimes, 24, is in the last season of his rookie contract and will make $4.3 million.
This trade allows the Mavericks to utilize part of their $12.9 million non-taxpayer midlevel exception. Previously, with Hardaway's contract on the books, they were limited to the $5.2 million taxpayer midlevel exception.
Mavs general manager Nico Harrison recently highlighted that re-signing starting small forward Derrick Jones Jr. is the team's top priority this offseason. Jones, known for his strong perimeter defense, played last season on a veteran's minimum deal.
During the past season, Hardaway averaged 14.4 points per game, mainly coming off the bench as the Mavs' sixth man. However, his role diminished towards the end of the regular season and throughout the playoffs, where he was benched in four of the last eight games in the Western Conference Finals and NBA Finals.
Hardaway has spent five and a half seasons with Dallas, arriving as part of the Kristaps Porzingis trade with the New York Knicks in January 2019. He averaged 15.2 points per game during his time with the Mavericks.
Quentin Grimes, who has averaged 8.5 points per game over 168 career games, including 90 starts for the Knicks, was limited to just six games for the Pistons due to right knee soreness after being acquired in a trade deadline deal that sent Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks to New York.
