Washington: Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman have come together once again for the romantic comedy "A Family Affair," 12 years after their first collaboration in "The Paperboy," according to People. Reflecting on their past project, Efron recalled the unique experience of playing a young man infatuated with an older woman (Kidman) who is romantically linked to a convicted killer. "We had so much fun doing that, but it was crazy," Efron reminisced.
In their latest project, the duo approaches their roles with a lighter touch. In Netflix's "A Family Affair," Efron, 36, stars as a self-absorbed Hollywood actor with relationship issues, who sets his sights on the mother (Kidman, 57) of his assistant (Joey King, 24). Despite the different genre and tone, Efron's admiration for Kidman remains unchanged. "I'm still so enamored with Nicole," he admitted. "There's a part of me that pinches myself when I realize who I'm working with. That feeling was even more pronounced during 'The Paperboy' because I was a lot younger and very nervous."
Kidman echoed Efron's sentiments, emphasizing the ease that comes with their shared history. "It's really helpful when you're doing this sort of work together that you've already got a history because it's easy," Kidman explained. "You're not working to create a history. So I'm not like, 'Can I touch you?' I feel incredibly trusting of Zac." Efron added, "We both feel safe, and we take care of each other."
Kidman praised the script, written by Carrie Solomon, as a refreshing take on the rom-com genre. "We've seen older men with younger women for ages, and it's been completely acceptable," she said. "The problem is we haven't had the equivalent from all different viewpoints, with women telling the stories." She continued, "And we need game men. [Efron] came in and made the film because he was like, 'I'm here to have fun, to play, and to very much be a part of this and be there for you,' for both Joey and me."
During the filming of "A Family Affair," Efron was simultaneously preparing for his role in the wrestling sports thriller "The Iron Claw." "A lot of the stuff that I was doing in preparation kind of worked its way into 'A Family Affair,'" Efron said. "Like the ice bath was just in front of my trailer. I was constantly doing it because I was so sore."
"A Family Affair" is now streaming on Netflix, reported People.
